Shein, the Chinese fast fashion giant, has officially made its return to India, five years after being banned in 2020. The popular fashion app is now available for download on both Google Play Store and the Apple App Store under the name 'SHEIN India Fast Fashion.' This comeback has been facilitated through a strategic partnership with Reliance Retail, marking a significant shift in the brand's presence in the Indian market.
On June 29, 2020, the Indian government banned 59 Chinese apps, including Shein, citing data security concerns amid escalating border tensions with China. At the time, Shein’s abrupt exit left many Indian customers in the lurch, with pending orders and an uncertain future. However, in 2025, Shein has re-emerged, now backed by an Indian retail giant, promising a fresh start.
Reliance Retail has secured a licensing deal to sell Shein’s fashionwear in India, with the app proudly announcing its return with the message, "The fashion OG is back." The app currently offers shipping services in Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Thane, with plans to expand to pan-India shipping soon.
This relaunch was anticipated after the Indian government disclosed in parliament that Reliance had entered into an agreement with Shein. Under this deal, Indian manufacturers will supply products sold under the Shein brand, addressing some of the earlier concerns about foreign data and product sourcing.
Founded in China in 2012 and later headquartered in Singapore, Shein became a global phenomenon by offering trendy, affordable Western-style clothing. Its appeal among young consumers in India was unmatched due to its competitive pricing and vast selection. The app’s ban in 2020 was a significant setback, but its partnership with Reliance indicates a calculated effort to regain its foothold in the Indian market.
